Democrats Plan To Filibuster Trump SCOTUS Pick
Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley informed Politico that he will filibuster any nominee for SCOTUS that Trump submits. The only acception would be for Trump to agree to appoint Judge Merrick Garland of the U.S. Court of Appeals in the D.C. Circuit.
“This is a stolen seat. This is the first time a Senate majority has stolen a seat,” said Merkley in the interview. “We will use every lever in our power to stop this.”
Merkley Could Create Partisan Uproar
This filibuster will create an enormous partisan battle over Trump’s nominee, especially if Merkley is able to unite another 41 Democrats to join him in this fight.
Senator Amy Klobuchar also informed her Twitter followers that Supreme Court nominees can be blocked by Senate minority, which is unlike other judicial or executive nominees.
Fighting Tooth And Nail Against Trump
Merkley’s party leader, Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, has also confirmed he plans to fight “tooth and nail” against any nominee who isn’t “mainstream.”
“Before they’ve even heard who this individual is, you’ve got some of them saying, absolutely no,” said Press Secretary Sean Spicer. “The default used to be, unless unqualified, confirmed. And it is now going to, always no. And I think that’s a pretty sad message.”
Trump wants Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to go nuclear if Merkley or other liberal Democrats are able to block his high court pick’s nomination.
Currently, McConnell believes they can reach some type of agreement and that Trump’s nominee will be someone both parties can support.
How can Trump best squash this filibuster?
